There’s really no other way to put it. The Sims 3: Pets is the best expansion released since the series first launched in 2009. Trust me. I’m a horse and I know what I’m talking about. Even non-horses will enjoy hearing their steed’s gentle clip-clops as you trot through Appaloosa Plains and explore it from the perspective of a pet. And of course, everything that made The Sims 3 so great in the first place is still here, making Pets as good a reason as any to load up The Sims 3 for another romp.

You’ll love
– The deep horse creation mode – The thrill of jumping – Making humans serve you

You’ll hate
– Dogs. Who likes dogs? – Cats. They’re not as cute as you think – Human Sims. Without horses, they’d be useless

Conclusie
De Sims 3 Beestenbende bevat zo ontzettend veel nieuwe mogelijkheden dat we in deze review lang niet alles hebben kunnen bespreken. Als je systeem goed genoeg is voor het spel is het beslist een uitbreiding die elke Simsfan moet hebben. Of je nou dol bent op dieren of niet, deze virtuele huisdieren zijn zo realistisch en leuk neergezet dat ze ieders hart meteen zullen veroveren. Er is met deze uitbreiding ook een prachtige nieuwe wereld toegevoegd die perfect is voor grote huishoudens met huisdieren. Je zal dan ook vele uren plezier beleven aan het ontdekken en verkennen van deze nieuwe wereld en alle leuke nieuwe mogelijkheden die deze uitbreiding heeft te bieden.

All told then the main question that seem’s to be on everyone’s lips is the games value for money factor, but having stated the reasons why we think it is already we just hope that gamers will see The Sims 3 Pets for the stand alone that it most definitely is, s opposed to the expansion pack that it is billed as. Great graphic’s from EA play again, that have become standard in this much-loved franchise, as well as superb sound and lighting. The storyline are engaging and offer some light-hearted entertainment and comedy moments, but at the same time they are inoffensive and very easy on the younger audience.

Basically, it’s a Sims game. I think it’s well put together, easy to control and geared for players that enjoy making up their own fun. It has a little more focus this time out thanks to the mysteries you can solve, but I didn’t find the addition of pets to be all that thrilling. The voice command feature could be completely absent as far as I’m concerned, and I’m not sure that the additional content featured here is worth another $50 for console owners. I’d definitely suggest renting before you buy, but I enjoyed it enough that I’m sure I’ll revisit it again in the future.

I’ll get the bad news out of the way up front. The major downside is that if you already own and have sunk hours into the lives, loves and careers of your fictional family in The Sims 3, you’ll have to start from scratch here. You can use pre-made families that EA have put together or create your own, but the console version of The Sims 3: Pets won’t let you import your old Sims 3 saved family into Appaloosa Plains. It’s a weird choice, and one likely to stick in the craw of those who already dedicated days, weeks and months to a Sim family and hoped to expand on your beloved pixel household with the new additions that Pets has to offer.

There’s well over 100 different breeds to choose from. If you purchase the game new, you’ll also be able to download ten exclusive breeds. However, instead of being actual breeds, they’re more or less “pet skins” for the current set of breeds. So if you want your Pomeranian to look like a Panda, or a German Shepard to look like a Tiger, you have that option. Once you select your breed, you’ll have most of the sliders you’d expect, but you can also create custom coats of fur and change the length of their fur as well. I was successfully able to closely replicate my three real dogs with a few minor altercations.

In summary, The Sims 3: Pets is proof that EA hasn’t run out of ideas for new creative content just yet. There was a very real danger that this expansion could have been a stale offering since it’s the third of its kind, but the addition of horses is a game-changer, and the option to take full control of your pets breathes new life into the experience. It’s questionable how much mileage we’re going to get from The Sims 3 from here on in, but this one will keep the fans happy for some time.

PC Only heeft een Nederlandstalige review online gezet van De Sims 3 Beestenbende voor PC en Mac. Het spel wordt goed beoordeeld en krijgt uiteindelijk een 9 uit 10.

The Sims 3: Pets is dé uitbreiding om jouw leven te spiegelen aan het leven van je Sims. Nu kunnen ook Sims op pad gaan met hun hond, katten plagen of door het dorp galopperen met hun paard. Zeer tof is dat je nu voor het eerst ook de controle kunt nemen over je huisdieren en dus zelf beslissen wat ze doen. In het verleden werd dit gedaan door de AI en kon je ze eigenlijk enkel maar voederen en met ze spelen. Wat ook een leuke toevoeging is zijn de paarden. Dankzij de open wereld van The Sims 3 is het mogelijk om paard te rijden, deze te trainen en mee te doen aan wedstrijden. Wie zelfs goed zoekt, vindt misschien wel de eenhoorn!

Een andere leuke feature zijn de eigenschappen en karakteristieken van je huisdieren. Elk huisdier zal hierdoor anders reageren op situaties waardoor zelden 2 huisdieren in een huishouden hetzelfde zijn. Het enige kritiekpunt, dat ik ook bij de preview aanhaalde, is de moeilijkheid bij grote huishoudens. Spelen met 8 Sims en 2 huisdieren is gewoon niet gezellig. Je verliest algauw het overzicht, en dit speelt enkel maar in het nadeel van je huishouden. Niettemin is The Sims 3: Pets een geslaagde uitbreiding die je zeker in huis moet halen.
